Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary scientific field that develops methods and software tools for storing, retrieving, organizing and analyzing biological data. Bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics and engineering to study biological data and processes.


Developmental biology

The scientific field of Developmental Biology deals with how multicellular organisms grow and develop. Deriving from embryology today it examines the genetic control of growth, differentiation and specialisation of different cell types and organs.

Main model organisms are thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana), corn (Zea mays), snapdragon (Antirrhinum) and Petunia among plants and Caenorhabditis elegans, fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster), zebrafish (Danio rerio), African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis), chick (Gallus gallus) and mouse (Mus musculus) among animals.
