Developmental biology

Developmental biology is about how single organisms grow and develop. Deriving from embryology today it examines the genetic control of growth, differentiation and specialisation of different cell types and organs.

Main model organisms are thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana), corn (Zea mays), snapdragon (Antirrhinum) and Petunia among plants and Caenorhabditis elegans, fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster), zebrafish (Danio rerio), African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis), chick (Gallus gallus) and mouse (Mus musculus) among animals.
